Walthamstow Lower
A favourite of ours and occasional BCAC venue is day ticket water Lower Maynard on the Walthamstow complex. Reasonably stocked with some very special fish it is a challenge but in previous events some awesome fish have been caught. Averaging twenties there are some stunning fish to just over 40lbs in this cracking day only venue.

Home of some of the prettiest fully scaled carp in the country the BCAC eliminator here gives lads the chance to fish the venue at night in search of those elusive monsters. Make no mistake, the Lower does not give up it’s prizes easily and a bit of thought will be required, but the fish are stunning and very worthy of capture. Potentially the Lower could break the record for the biggest fish of the tournament to date (Terry Gorbut – 38.09 – Thorney Weir) and with a very good head of twenties and a few thirties plus the odd lump top go for it’s a pedigree water that’s for sure. Available normally on a day only day ticket basis with tickets on the bank.
Walthamstow Lower Round Up
Results
1st - Darren Stevens / Dave Forward - 45.00
2nd - Lee Jackson / Gary Peet - 44.04 (Team Tackle Box)
3rd - Paul Poynter / Ian Beedall - 35.05
The Lower really is one of the finer lakes on the Walthamstow complex and the fish in there are more than worthy of capture. However, the usually no night fishing venue does not give it’s prizes up easily and the tough weather condition made things even tougher than usual. However, the wealth of local talent meant that there would be no giving up and with an impressive display of pegging making for a very even match the lads went inot eh event confident of a fair and even match.
The first score check is usually 6pm but nothing had been caught by this stage. Clearly the nights and early mornings were going to be the hot times and so it proved with 4 fish coming to the banks during the hours of darkness. Last years winners Paul Poynter and Ian Beedell emerged as early leaders with a cracking 35.05 common form the sluice swim in the road bank and it was the other two road bank swims that made up the rest of the running. Jams Cobden and Shannon Davies held second with a fish of 26.07 and former BCAC champs and almost last out of the baggers Lee Jackson and Gary Peet sat in third with their fish of 22.10. Stow regular Shaky Dave was the only other scorer and his 15.06 finished up the line up for the first section. By close of play after a hot Saturday there had been just three fish out. An early morning 21.10 for Darren Stevens and Dave Forward put them just off the podium and a mid day challenge came in form Steve and Jamie Haywood but at 19.14 it was not enough to trouble the leaders. Jackson / Peet landed another fish in the heat of the day to put them into first on 44.04 making the other two qualifiers slip down a slot and that was it for Saturday.
The last night was all to play for but incredibly only two fish were landed. Both over 30 they were well worthy and James Chalks 30.00 mirror and Nick Moores 31.04 (pb) made their day if not their match. With the heat now rising it looked like game over before a shout was heard from swim 1 (The Steps) just before 12. The final hooter was warming up when a choddie did the damage for Stevens and Forward and at 23.06 their mirror was enough to catapult them from zero to hero with 15 odd minutes left. Jackson and Peet slipped to second on 44.04 putting 25 points on the score card for Team Tackle Box and Steven / Forwards solitary 35 common was enough to get them through to the semis in third. |
