Berners Hall
We return to Essex syndicate water Berners Hall again for 2006 but this time in April were some very good weights can be expected if the weather holds out. A prolific
doubles reservoir that holds fish to over 30, Berners is a good bet for bag anglers. Slightly deeper than your usual waters and crystal clear it’s a venue that responds well to accurate angling.

Pre-Match Round Up
Essex water Berners Hall has been growing in popularity and also stature in the carp world over the last few years and is now a very creditable water. Clear and deep it responds well to a number of tactics and with a good head of fish, this syndicate water in the peaceful Essex countryside should throw up a few fish. Tight spodding tactics and zigs are good tactics and to get through the top boys need to be looking for in excess of 100lbs for a place on the podium. Last years qualifiers Bristol Bombers Adrian Mercato and Paul Russell return to attempt another qualification but with the likes of Elstow anglers Graham Slaughter and Tim Denyer there for Venture, and a whole host of other talent, they will have their work cut out if they want to repeat last years suuccess
Berners Hall Round Up
Results
1st - Reg Verney and Glen Beardsall
2nd - Paul Butler and Paul Shearman
3rd - Miles Zambra and Howard Bavnes
For some reason it always seems to be cold at Berners, and this year was no exception. Despite the forecast of good weather the night before the match saw cold winds and anglers shivering. At draw time on match morning the weather was still the same and despite a forecast of fine weather, the Essex countryside was cold. A few fish were showing all over the lake and no particular swim looked like it would be a runaway winner. Miles Zambra and Howard Baynes landed the first fish of the day with just an hour and a half on the clock and it weighted in at 7.06. They were overtaken just half an hour later with a 24.11 to Reg Verney and Glen Beardsall and Simon Lowes and Chris Patterson took up the last qualifying slot, jumping into second with a 9.06.
Just two more fish were banked through the evening. A 24.08 to Paul Butler / Paul Shearman saw them challenge the leaders who answered back with an 18.10 to re-establish a good margin at the top, and into dark there was no change and it was all to play for.
It wasn’t until the early hours that the fish started to feed, well one anyway, and that came to the rods of Zambra / Baynes at 5lbs 08oz. As the match report was being broadcast on Talk Sport another fish decided to get into the limelight and at 18.10 it helped Verney / Beardsall increase their lead over the chasing pack. Lowes / Patterson added a 9.08 to their score to mean that Verney / Beardsall held first at the half way stage on 61.15, second was Butler / Sharman on 24.08 and third was Lowes / Patterson with 18.14. First might be edging away but second and third were still definitely catchable.
By dark there was only one team adding to their tally namely the leaders who had now put three fish on the bank to make 114.13. Four fish came to the bank through the night, one to the leaders to put them on 129.12 by dawn and two just getting pairs onto the score sheet. The final fish did have an effect on the leader board and at 6.14 it moved Zambra / Baynes into third place by 14 ounces as they sat on 19.12 just ahead of Lowes / Patterson on 18.14.
With three hours left on the clock it was third place that were in jeopardy as 19.12 could easily be pushed out of contention by any one of the other teams in the event. The last few hours saw the leaders move ahead and finish on 157.13 and second placed Butler and Shearman also confirmed their places in the semi’s landing a 20.10 in the dying stages to up their score to 45.02. Baynes / Zambra could eventually breath a hefty sigh of relief, their 19.12 being enough to put them through as nothing else was caught. |
